Abu Simbel
The Experience
Some places stop you in your tracks. This Abu Simbel day trip is one of them. Carved out of a sandstone cliff on the banks of Lake Nasser, the twin temples of Ramesses II and Nefertari are among the most ambitious things ancient Egypt ever built, four colossal statues guarding a façade that stretches 30 metres wide. Twice a year, on February 22nd and October 22nd, the rising sun reaches deep into the inner sanctuary and illuminates the faces of the gods inside. This Abu Simbel day trip from Aswan gets you there and gives you the time to take it all in properly.
Abu Simbel is a three hour drive south of Aswan. and every minute of it is worth it. Most visitors to Egypt never make it this far south, which means you’ll have one of the country’s most extraordinary sites largely to yourself. The temples face east for a reason, the ancient Egyptians designed them so the sunrise would do exactly what it still does today, thousands of years later. That level of precision is what makes this Abu Simbel day trip unlike anything else on the itinerary.
Aswan is already one of Egypt’s most beautiful cities. Calm, unhurried, and sitting right on the Nile. Combining it with an Abu Simbel day trip gives you two completely different sides of southern Egypt in one visit. The temples in the morning, the river in the afternoon. It’s the kind of day that reminds you why you came. Book your Abu Simbel day trip with Gocha Tours and see it all for yourself Today.
Your Abu Simbel Day Trip
You’ll leave Aswan early, the drive south takes around three hours, and arriving at Abu Simbel in the morning light is worth every minute of it. Standing in front of the four colossal statues of Ramesses II, it’s hard to believe these temples were carved entirely by hand over 3,000 years ago. Inside, the walls are covered in vivid reliefs that have held their colour through the centuries.
What most visitors don’t expect is the relocation story. In the 1960s, the entire complex was cut into blocks and moved 65 metres uphill to save it from the rising waters of Lake Nasser. That engineering feat alone is worth knowing before you walk in. After exploring both temples at your own pace, you’ll head back to Aswan in the afternoon.
